Returning for the 8th year at Newtown Junction the globally celebrated Fête de la Musique took place on the 18th of June. Festival attendees were spoilt for choice with 11 live performances which included headlining acts BCUC, Letoya Makhene, Bonga Kwana and Farai Matake.
The world-renowned music festival was established in South Africa in 2010 by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) with the aim of unearthing new talent. However, the festival’s vision is not only to highlight talent but to also be an incubator and create long term-opportunities for the new generation of performers. Every year professional and up-and-coming musicians are provided with the opportunity to apply to secure a spot on the FDLM stage, and for the 2022 edition a total of twenty-two acts were selected out of the 300 applications.
To kick-off the festival, on the 17th of June, a music workshop was held at AMPD Studios in Newtown Junction for the 22 successful applicants. The workshop discussed “Navigating the South African music industry “ and was organised by IFAS and facilitated by French music label No Format, music production company Bassline, and other notable music industry players
