After a two year hiatus, R&B /Soul artist Viwe has returned with a new look, sound and a brand new vibe. Now affiliated with Johannesburg -based independent label Unmuted Records, she brings forth her first offering ” Rapture ” from her soon to be released E.P ”Ngoku”. The song produced by Lincoln Long, not only brilliantly brings together old school R&B elements with a more current soulful expression, It further solidifies her growth and footprint in the industry. Writer , Singer and Performing Artist Viwe Tyolwana was born in the Eastern Cape on the 22nd of May 1992. Rooted in the effervescent small town, Queenstown, she began to understand the power of her voice in her primary school phase, Balmoral Girls’ Primary School Choir , and then later joining the Queenstown Girls ‘High School Choir. She was then selected to be one of the few singers to take music as an extra subject in her senior years, an effort that would lead to her recording a choir album and established herself as one of the solo vocalists for the choir from grades 10 -12. During her school career Viwe competed in a number of Eisteddfod Competitions for her Singing and Drama talents and won multiple awards for her performances and auditions.
She finished her Matric year strong acquiring music and drama ( acting) colour and academic distinctions at the end of 2010. Viwe completed her tertiary studies at the University of Witwatersrand with BA Honors in Media Studies, however, this important feat did not deter her from her musical plans. During her studies she continued to sing, launching her own Youtube Channel which grossed over 4000 views in over 6 months, she performed live at South African restaurants such as Kitchener’s Calvary Bar in Johannesburg and The Piano Bar in Cape Town to name a few. Viwe later sang back up vocals for a number of musicians namely Fortune Masina, RJ Benjamen, Clint Brink, Wikid, Stoan from world-renowned Bongo Muffin, MXO, Kabomo and shared the same stage as Hip Hop heavyweights, Bozza from the legendary Skwatta Camp and Mr. Selwyn. Viwe also performed at the 2015 SA Hip Hop Awards supporting Fortune Masina and his live band “Therefore”.
She also performed with recycling music sensation Mobius loop at the Mpact Polymers first launch in SA. In 2016, Viwe finally released her first solo work with producer and composer Luke Davis of Spearhead Arts in a joint effort to create a unique new sound . Her collaboration with Davis birthed her first single “ It goes without saying”(IGWS) and second single “ Uyandicaza”. Both the songs reached an unexpected level of success with IGWS being playlisted on a number of radio stations including, TransAfrica Radio, YFM, Mixfm , Tuks FM, VOW fm and many more. The second single “Uyandichaza went on to officially launch the music video on SABC youth show “ Hectic 99 “ and has played on a number of radio stations in South Africa and has since been featured on global music blogs.
After a three year break, working on new material, Viwe is back releasing her new single “Rapture “ from her up and coming E.P “Ngoku” under the Unmuted Records Group, founded by Producer and Artist Lincoln Long. Produced by Long, and written by Viwe “ Rapture “ is a fun fusion of 90’s Soul/Rnb fused Hip Hop and Funk in a distinctly South African way.
