The 7th annual White Star Celebrity Cook-off lived up to its hype at The Ridge Casino in Witbank on Saturday, the 13th of October 2018, where some of Mzansi’s much-loved celebrities were pitted against one another other to show off their culinary skills. At this year’s cooking competition, featuring the likes of Manaka Ranaka, Pallance Dladla, Musa Mthombeni, Sandile Ntshingila and many more, celebrities were divided into five groups, and each team received a mystery box filled with a variety of ingredients. Their task was to incorporate White Star Super Maize Meal in creating scrumptious starters and main meals into each dish.
Each team was tasked to come up with a catchy team name, and with just under two hours allocated for cooking, everyone enthusiastically got to work, filling the kitchen with enticing aromas which whet the judges’ appetites.
With their crispy pap and salmon as a starter and couscous pap beef and an egg for the main course, team ‘Pap Capture’, led by Andile Gaelesiwe (of Khumbulekhaya fame), assisted by Manaka Ranaka, Musa Mthombeni and Miranda Ntshangase, impressed the judges enough to take home the title of 2018 White Star Celebrity Cook-Off Champions.
“I’ve always watched this event on social media and I was so excited when I got the invite. From the luxury bus with its disco lights to the surprise gifts in our rooms every night. I can’t stop telling everyone about my weekend. Thank you for inviting me, I hope to be part of it next year”, said TV presenter and Youtuber, Merica Monamodi
It is evident from trends on Twitter throughout the weekend that this competition captured the imagination of South Africans. Thanks for his dexterity with cooking, whilst for keeping the Twitterati abreast with developments in eMalahleni, TV presenter, Musa Mthombeni, walked away with an all-expenses-paid trip to Zanzibar for him and a partner.
Judge Lucia Mthiyane shares, “I was highly impressed with the level of creativity that was displayed on Saturday. All the dishes presented by all the teams were well thought-out and flavoursome. Team Pap Capture came out on top by claiming the first position.”
