Plot Twists & Music At The AFROPUNK Battle Of The Bands Final Amplified By EDGE

On Saturday 16 December, fans and music lovers gathered at the Mahlareng Stadium in Thembisa to witness an exciting finale of AFROPUNK’s Battle Of The Bands competition amplified by Hunter’s EDGE. Breaking the norm of having one winning band, the judges surprised fans by announcing Automatic Live and Stiff Pap as the winners of the competition.

Automatic Live and Stiff Pap have made history by being the first South African artists to walk away with the winning title in this global competition.

The finale in Tembisa was a conclusion to an exciting four week series of Battle of the Bands events amplified by EDGE, which were hosted in Soweto, Tsakane and Newtown. The Battle OF The Bands event is a celebration of difference rooted in AFROPUNK’s recognition of the indie/punk/hardcore scene outside of its “normal” fanbase. With a total of five bands competing, two winning bands were chosen as the ultimate competition winners for their refreshing performance and reinventive style, like Hunter’s EDGE.

“Performing at AFROPUNK Battle of the Bands amplified by EDGE, was an amazing new experience. Being able to compete against such talented artists and musicians forced us to be inventive with our sound and the way we approach music. We’re excited about the future and opportunities that lay ahead”, comments Nathi Louw, lead singer of Automatic Live.

The Battle of the Bands competition is a platform giving emerging talent an opportunity to perform at the final AFROPUNK event in Johannesburg on 30-31 December alongside world class headlining acts, including Solange Knowles, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals Laura Mvula and many more.

“AFROPUNK fest is celebrated globally for breaking social barriers through arts, music, events and fashion, so it makes sense for us as EDGE to partner with a movement that believes in being reinventive”, says Brand Manager, Tania Kotze.

In addition to performing at the main Afropunk event, Automatic Live & Stiff Pap also walked away with a cash prize of R15 000 and bragging rights of being crowned as the first South African AFROPUNK Battle of the Bands winners amplified by EDGE.
