Yesterday, Nike launched “Just Do It: Caster Semenya”, a film celebrating the tenacious spirit and strength of an athlete who is breaking barriers and writing her own story: Caster Semenya.
The two-time Olympian and middle distance runner is one of the most decorated athletes of the last decade and a force be reckoned with. Over the last 10 years, she has been breaking records, collected 18 gold medals and inspired a new generation of athletes to be the best they can be on and off the track.
The film is an ode to the journey and triumphs of Caster Semenya, a bold and unapologetic athlete striving to be the best in her sport. The film allows audiences to delve into Caster’s history and shows the pivotal moments that shaped her into the athlete she is today.
Caster rose to fame in 2008 when she became the 13th fastest woman ever to run the 800 metres, earning her first gold medal in the World Junior Championship at just 17 years old.
“My first win was such a great feeling. It was a dream come true and a realization that hard work, dedication and believing in yourself no matter the obstacles pays off,” recalls Semenya. “Growing up in a small rural area, I was never told I could run, but I always knew I was born to run, to run fast and to win.”
The road to success for any athlete is rarely smooth, and in Caster’s case, despite countless struggles, the Olympian remains composed and focused on her goal: to compete and win at the highest levels of her sport.
“I like to say “never stop running” because that’s my approach on the track and in life. We all face barriers and challenges at some stage and I’ve found my inspiration through running and competing to be the best I can be. I hope this is an inspirational message for every aspiring athlete,” said Caster Semenya.
Caster’s unwavering tenacity makes her an inspiration to athletes and the next generation of track and field stars; those who are fearless in their own pursuits and who find strength in stories of others who’ve established their ambitions and let nothing stand in their way.
Through this film, Nike celebrates Caster and all athletes who have discovered their purpose and worked hard to make it their reality.
“We all have purpose and I believe that each of us has an assignment we’re here to complete. We have been given life, but no one can live it for you and you have to go out every day and work hard to earn it,” Caster adds.
