The First Lady of SA Hip Hop, Ms Supa is thrilled to announce the release of her latest single titled Public Service Announcement (P.S.A).
Ms Supa was inspired to write and record P.S.A to firstly; communicate a message that addresses certain dynamics within the Hip Hop industry in South Africa whilst she secondly; celebrates female Hip Hop artists like Foxy Brown, who inspired and introduced her to the Hip Hop genre.
“I wrote this song because I wanted to pay homage to the Queens that got me to fall in love with Hip Hop. At the same time, I wanted to address the Hip Hop industry in SA. We have come miles ahead in terms of females; however, I do not like where we are headed as the double standards are still at play” Ms Supa says.
It is of no doubt that the South African Hip Hop industry is moving towards a more local and authentic sound. However, the gap between male and female artists is still quite evident. Throughout history, women have always had a hard time getting recognition for a job well done or being taken seriously. This happens in the world, in corporate and definitely in the Hip Hop industry.
Ms Supa adds that “because the founders of Hip Hop were male, women have had to work twice as hard to prove that they are just as good. We are definitely equal in skill, but the market is yet to take us (women) in the same light”.
To get a taste of Ms Supa’s views on the Hip Hop landscape, P.S.A is now officially available to listen and download on digital music platforms such as Deezer, Spotify. YouTube Music, Google, Sound Cloud, Amazon Music and Tidal. Link to P.S.A single
