On Wednesday, 15 July, the South African Music Awards announced their nominees for the annual awards show which will be happening virtually this year from 3-7 August. Artist, MUZI was recognised by SAMA judges and nominated in the Best Alternative Album category for ‘ZENO’.
This comes after a highly successful year for the artist who released the anticipated album on October 11, 2019 worldwide through !K7/WE.THE.BUNDU. The album is a presentation of a new level in the artist’s unmistakable brand of modern African music.
‘ZENO’ was written, recorded and produced while on tour in the US, UK and EU. The album’s sonics reveal the direct influence of his Kwa-Zulu Natal upbringing. Having soaked up the sounds of the 80s and 90s, he now expertly blends together cutting edge urban and electronic music with local genres like Maskandi, Kwaito, Iscathamiya and South African Bubblegum Pop of the 80s and 90s.
This album continues to be a demonstration of MUZI’s ahead-of-the-game musical output. Listeners have experienced him now as a songwriter, composer, vocalist and producer accompanied by select features from a few of South Africa’s exciting new talents including Espacio Dios, BlackRose, Zithulele (BCUC) and Samthing Soweto.
‘ZENO’ includes singles and music videos, Good Vibes Only and Phuma (Bad Self) which have received high rotation in South Africa on Trace TV, MTV Base and Channel O and in France on Radio Nova.
At the forefront of the next generation of musicians in the streaming era, MUZI is a regular fixture on many of the world’s most recognized playlists on all major streaming platforms including Spotify (has reached over 300 000 monthly listeners), Apple Music, and Deezer.
He continues to excite MUZI fans having recently during South Africa’s lockdown, participated in Jägermeister’s #SaveTheNight campaign which saw him creating an original song with fans in an exclusive Zoom session.
