The Music Imbizo is an international music business conference, exhibition and film festival. It is a platform to exhibit, network, share expertise and knowledge over six days whilst looking at ways to improve the music industry as a viable business entity in the continent. The conference has grown to attract local & international speakers, musicians, brands, partners and sponsors. Past speakers include the vice president of Warner Bros Seymour Stein (USA), Monte Malone (MUSEXPO, USA), Audu Maikori (Chocolate City Group – Nigeria), Nasty C (Artist, South Africa), Professor Joseph Shabalala (Ladysmith Black Mambazo, South Africa), Master KG (Artist, South Africa) plus Keith Harris (Artist Manager: Stevie Wonder, UK) and many other distinguished industry professionals.
The theme for the virtual Music Imbizo 2021 is KUSHEREKA AFRIKA – YALIYOPITA. SASA. BAADAYE meaning “CELEBRATING AFRIKA – THE PAST.THE PRESENT. THE FUTURE” in English. The Sankofa bird became an obvious symbol for this … according to Wikipedia: “Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates to “Go back and get it” and also refers to the Bono Adinkra symbol represented either with a stylized heart shape or by a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward carrying a precious egg in its mouth.” In 2021, Music Imbizo celebrates everything that is Africa by choosing the most spoken language in the continent, SWAHILI, for the theme with a lot of symbolism from Ghana.
The Music Imbizo’s vision is simple – contribute to the creation of a highly organized, sustainable and successful music industry in the continent, where practitioners are knowledgeable and have a world-view of the ins and outs of the music business. “For 2021, we are looking to host over 40 speakers and musicians from over 30 countries … more important this year, is our inaugural HACKATHON and MOOT Court Competition” Sphe Mbhele – Project Manager.
