Monde Twala, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ViacomCBS Networks Africa commented, “The 16th of June is a pivotal moment in South Africa’s history and is an important time to reflect on the significant contributions of youth in our country. We have to understand where we come from to build a brighter future for ourselves. MTV Base are honoured to use the uniting power of music to celebrate and inspire young people in partnership with The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.”
Since the ground-breaking launch of MTV Base in South Africa 15 years ago, the channel has been the cultural home of the millennial generation, pioneering and creating innovative content for the youth that is reflective of their realities. As the country marks 44 years since the uprisings of 1976, the progressive youth of today are facing issues from high unemployment, a global health pandemic, continued systemic racism and the scourge of gender-based violence amongst women and children.
This Youth Day, MTV Base and The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation will use the power of music, culture and arts to unify youth communities.
MEC for Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr. Mbali Hlophe says: “Youth Day is one of the most reflective days in Mzansi. Not only does it remind us of the power of young people, but the responsibility and potential a young mind truly possesses. Through the arts and sport, we are able to dispel the age-old song lyric, proving that youth is indeed not wasted on the young.”
The Youth Day 2020 Celebration will feature special appearances by influential young South Africans in activism, the arts, and culture who will highlight what it means to be a youth in the current clime and spotlight key issues today’s young people are tackling. Viewers can catch the special on Tuesday 16th of June on MTV Base (DSTV Channel 322) this Youth Day at 5pm CAT.
