February’s instalment of #NewMusicFriday witnessed the wrath of Vaal rapper SiBi latest EP Riverside which dropped on the 12th of February. The title of the EP pays homage to her hometown, the Vaal, known for its river, and boasts of guest appearances from some of the best up-and-coming and popular talents including Da L.E.S, AKA, Parlemo, and superstar producer TylerICU.
SiBi is a multifaced creative who is not only a rapper but a singer and rising producer on a big mission to reinvent South African music through her timeless fusion of Trap and Afro R&B, soulfully tied with tones of House music. The EP had us captured with these sounds from the first to the last song. We just had to find out more about this offering.
We caught up with SiBi to find out about her latest piece of work Riverside and more. Here’s how it all went down.
If you had superpowers, what would they be and what would you do with them to make the world a better place currently?
SiBi: The power to refill so I never run out of data, I would refill my wallet and refill my closet for once we can go out again. I would go around refilling people’s basic needs so they don’t have to worry about that. Being invisible too so I can crash all of my hero’s studio sessions and get all the keys. I would also get the vaccine and spread it worldwide so we can get back to normal life.
Let’s get into the music. Who is SiBi (more about how you got into music) and what is she about (they type of music you make)?
SiBi: I am a reserved and light-hearted person now but growing up I would always sing and perform for whoever came to my house. I was extra energetic. You know that empty space close to the end of the song? Like the last 20 seconds? I freestyled on that part all the time! Then one of my friends had a trap house where one of the rooms was like a makeshift studio so that’s where I started recording. My sound is – if Hip hop and R&B had a baby during the summertime who likes to take night time drives. It’s an unfiltered and honest safe space. I am about being happy, empowered but also accepting and healing through the not so good times.
Tell us about your upcoming EP. Is it based on real-life experiences or were you just being creative about what you sing about? Why did you choose with the artists you’ve featured, and what impact have they made to the EP.
SiBi: Riverside is based on true stories, like my situationships, my nights out and my times at home alone. Me and Cubin (my engineer) just locked in. Everyone I featured was an amazing addition to the project because they all matched my sound. Some I have a few songs with and the feature/beat was just one of our songs together. We could really ‘hear’ them on the song and they came through that way.
What’s your favourite track on the EP and why.
SiBi: Nooo it’s so hard to choose but if I have to, my favourite song would be Pieces. I wrote it while things weren’t working out with someone and I was making peace with the fact that it was not going to get any better. Definitely deserved greater things than that so writing it helped me kind of realise it.
What can we expect from you anytime soon? Any virtual performances to look forward to, new music videos, collaborations or anything like that?
SiBi: I’m working on a few projects right now with a few people I am excited about, please check on my socials for more on that.
If you haven’t been plugged yet with this EP make sure you do yourself a favour and listen to it! It is a definite YES from us.
