Apple Music’s New Artist Spotlight for March is Honeymoan, a Cape Town-based 4-piece group who, in the short space of time that they’ve been together, have garnered global attention with their slick, pop offering. “We’re incredibly excited to be Apple Music’s New Artist Spotlight for March. It means the world to us to be championed by Apple Music, whose playlist features and support have really benefited our musical careers to date,” stated Honeymoan.
Their latest EP Weirdo is now available to stream on Apple Music, and is their first release on the back of their signing to UK label, Communion Records. Weirdo deals with the day-to-day struggles of the average twenty-something who feels out of place in a fast-paced, modern world.
After connecting in 2017 for what was supposed to be a simple jam session, Alison Rachel (vocals), Skye MacInnes (guitar), Josh Berry (bass) and Kenan Tatt (drums) realised that they were onto something more than they had originally conceived.
With their members drawn from a host of different local bands (Sakawa Boys, Twin Weaver, Yndian Mynah), they have formed a unique quartet with influences that range from Psychedelia to Indie to Shoegaze, whilst still maintaining their distinct South African sound.
Grounded in Alison Rachel’s penchant for tackling subjects not often covered in conventional pop music (depression, anxiety, middle class guilt, owning one’s sexuality), Honeymoan has crafted a sound that draws from a wide-range of inspiration including Drake, Alvvays, Red Hot Chili Peppers, St Vincent and Tame Impala.
They rounded off 2019 by selling out their first UK tour and now with their selection as Apple Music’s New Artist Spotlight – 2020 is off to an exciting start for Honeymoan.
