#FridayFeature | Meet New Skool Kwaito Artists Darkie Fiction

Darkie Fiction are Yoza Mnyanda and Kuthulakwenkosi “Katt Daddy” Siboto — a Johannesburg based duo formed in 2017, making music that draws influence from kwaito, afro-funk, neo-soul and hip hop, paying homage to authentic South African sounds of yesteryear. Embodying the likes of Brenda Fassie, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, TKZee and Boom Shaka, Darkie Fiction offer an ever-evolving alternative to the commonplace, imbued with conversations on mental illness, spirituality, parenthood and self-love in a time where South Africa’s rugged terrain begs for new paths to be taken toward greatness.

Their blowout music videos for Selula and Bhoza injected a much-needed effervescence into South Africa’s music scene both visually and sonically, preceding the release of their debut EP, Sobabini: A Mzantsi Evolution, in July of 2018, which saw them become Apple Music’s South African Spotlight Artist Of The Month. The two have risen to the occasion with DJ Si Noir in tow, striking up a great partnership with Adidas Originals while performing all over the country, as well as appearing on their own episode of Beyond the Sound with Red Bull Music and Channel O

The two, known affectionately by music industry contemporaries as “mom and dad,” due to their authenticity and warmth, enter 2020 off the back of a stellar performance at Afropunk Johannesburg with a new vision as well as a new addition to the family that resonates well into their creative lives. With this turn of the century, they aim to glance inward with the upcoming EP, Endaweni, pulling focus toward finally reaching their objective, allowing the world to experience the South Africa they have come to know and love.
