Entertainment, Music And Media Industry Unites To Mobilise Stop The Violence Campaign

The entertainment, music and media industry is a catalyst for change and making a positive difference to Africa. Over two days this week, the industry united to create the STOP THE VIOLENCE campaign to inspire and encourage immediate and continued action in South Africa to address the xenophobic attacks and pandemic levels of gender based femicide and violence against children.

The reported statistics of gender-based femicide violence against women and children in South Africa are alarming and have reached unacceptable levels of 5 times the global average. The country has seen numerous marches across cities demanding a stop to the violence with actionable results for protection and safety.

The STOP THE VIOLENCE campaign aims to support in educating and driving powerful conversation and encouraging the voice of change in homes, communities and society.

Alex Okosi, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) and BET International in his communication to employees, industry and clients said, “It’s crucial to remind Africans to unify and commit to stop the violence against fellow Africans, women and children. Africa has the potential to thrive together with mutual respect and dignity as one humanity and one nation to overcome this adversity. As an industry we must continue to exercise the power of our collective voice to impact this urgent change.”

The industry led initiative mobilised record labels, broadcasters, radio stations and media houses together with talent support from Caiphus Semenya, Busiswa, Nasty C, Amanda Black, Kelly Khumalo, Riky Rick and Tresor with many more committed artists who joined in solidarity to unify and contribute to the upliftment of the continent. The STOP THE VIOLENCE movement content went live across numerous media platforms on Sunday, 8th September.

Sipho Dlamini, Managing Director at Universal Music Group SA and Sub-Saharan Africa commented, “At times like this when it looks like there is no hope, then you see people stopping what they’re doing to come together as an industry and say something with one voice. Stop…Stop the violence…then there is a small glimmer of hope.”

Refiloe Ramogase, General Manager for Sony Music Entertainment Africa concluded, “We are living in a time where we need to lend our voices and platforms for good. Silence is not an option. Enough is enough.”
