Creativate Digital Arts Festival Calls For 2019 Submissions

Artists who are exploring the innovative space where arts and technology converge are invited to submit a proposal to be part of the second edition of the Creativate Digital Arts Festival in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown).

Creativate, which runs concurrently with the National Arts Festival from 27 June – 7 July 2019, aims once again to feature a wide array of exhibitions, lectures, workshops and performances from local and international artists and digital creatives.

“Creativate is a tech-meets-arts platform which showcases some of the best thinkers and creatives in their fields. The pilot programme included prominent forms of digital art, including video, visual design, VR and also talks by local and international techies ranging from designers and photographers to gamers and futurists,” explains lead curator Toby Shapshak.

“We want to explore the realms of theatre, dance, visual art, film, music, gaming, hacking, coding, design, robotics, virtual reality, crowdsourced inspiration, artificial intelligence and all the spaces and crevices in between,” adds Festival CEO and associate curator Tony Lankester.

Submissions for Creativate 2019 will be considered in any one or combination of arts disciplines where the proposed work features or deploys technology as a critical component or tool for execution of the work. Successful applicants will be offered a production budget, presentation/speaker’s fee or honorarium depending on the nature of the proposal. In addition, a contribution towards travel and accommodation will be provided along with an all-access pass to Creativate 2019 events.

Local and international artists and presenters interested in having their work considered are invited to register expressions of interest online by filling in the form at https://www.nationalartsfestival.co.za/2019-festival/creativate/

Creativate is presented by Standard Bank with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the DutchCulture centre for international cooperation.

The deadline for submissions is 31 December 2018. For enquiries please e-mail creativate@nationalartsfestival.co.za.
