Behind #LAChats: Whatchu Need To Know About Ricky Tyler

Bokamoso Kgomotso better known by his stage name Ricky Tyler was born free May 1994 at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, a month after the first democratic elections in South Africa. He was raised by his mother (a single parent) together with his siblings at Spruitview Gardens (East Rand).

In 2012, while Ricky was still in high school, he entered talent search auditions conducted by Judges from Orlando Florida (USA) at the Emperors Palace. He was selected to participate at the International Arts Convention “Applause Rising Talent Showcase” which took place in opportunity to be selected for the PLITZ New York Fashion Week in September 2013 to model exclusive clothing range. 

Ricky Tyler is a singer, rapper, and songwriter & is currently under the fast-rising production house/indie label Playground Productions and currently signed to Def Jam Africa/Universal Music Group SA.

He dropped his debut single SWERVE in 2016. Swerve was an epic R&B trap record that was guaranteed to make any girl swoon. Swerve was received so well that it attracted the attention of fellow Def Jam artist TSHEGO. That, in turn, led to the melodic “SWERVE REMIX” 

Late 2016 Ricky Tyler was presented with the opportunity to write a song for Vuzu. He successfully wrote and performed the soundtrack intro to VUZU RICH KIDS SEASON 2.

Ricky Tyler dropped his first single of the 2017 appropriately titled A.M and followed up with Ecstasy, which features two beautiful & talented singers namely Cape Town’s Rowlene & Mozambican artist Shellsy Baronet.Ecstasy is a soulful, artistic & refreshing take on relationship storytelling. 

Starting off 2018 Ricky Tyler hit the ground running with his latest single Déjà vu. Deja Vu is a heartfelt pop song reminiscing about loved ones that have left us too soon. Ricky takes the listener through a roller coaster of emotions as he recaps past experiences with his mates and learns to deal with the fact that they are no longer here. 

Ricky was nominated to be an Afropunk battle of the bands contestant and made it all the way to the final stages of the competition. He wrapped up 2018 with a guest feature on Yung Swiss’s Bottom Baby 2. 

Ricky spent the better part of 2019 working on his debut album and working with luxury brands such as and not limited to Palladium, Toe Porn, Pringle, Ben Sherman etc. 

Ricky closed 2019 off with a collaborative record with DJ Speedsta titled ‘Understand’ which featured Yung Swiss for Speedsta’s latest project Palm Trees & Pretty Girls. 

Early 2020 Ricky signed to Universal Music Group and released the 1st single and video of his upcoming project Thirty K’s. Since its release, the song has earned close to a 100k streams across all major platforms. Thirty K’s is a groovy 90’s themed ode to a brief but memorable interaction with a woman in Ricky’s life. 

On 29th May Ricky will release his 2nd single off Small World titled ‘Everything’ and a pre-order link the album. 

Everything is a modern-day take on classic RnB recorded in a church setting as Ricky serenades the girl next door.
