On Saturday 8 July, fans packed the Soweto Cricket Oval in Gauteng for the national finals of the 2017 Smirnoff Raga Bolo Championship. Over and above coming to see which of the top 14 tavern teams from around Mzansi would walk away with the R150,000 grand prize, they turned up to get down to the hottest House, Hip Hop and Kwaito beats, supplied by some of the country’s best artists.
The fast-moving five-a-side street soccer tournament final was dominated by KwaZulu-Natal, with Yayas Tavern from Pietermaritzburg taking home the winner’s title and Cibane Eating House from Umlazi scoring the R50,000 second-place prize. Making Bloemfontein proud was Lerako, a player from Sehlono Inn, who won the Golden Boot award for being the top goal scorer of the day. Making the matches especially exciting was the presence of professional scouts from Kemi Sports who came to check out the talent.
At the same time that all the action on the pitch was going down, an all-star line-up of artists had the party pumping. Starting off the celebrations was Hip Hop legend, DJ Hudson, who had everyone moving to his mixes, followed by DJ 2kza with his signature sing-along style of house music and occasional touch of old school Kwaito and Hip Hop that took the party to another level.
Next up were Sphectacula and DJ Naves, who played their latest tracks – getting everyone to groove. SAMA Award winner, Kwesta, then made the party move with his five-time platinum anthem, Ngud‘, along with other top tracks from his new Dakar II album, after which DJ Tira had the Oval shaking with his fresh hits.
Going next, the boys from Black Motion revved up the crowd even more by bringing their signature mix of drumming and DJing, with DJ Kent delivering banging beats on the ones and twos right after.
Next, the masses went wild for the Panache Boyz who dropped the dopest House beats, featuring favourites like Angel, Shooting Stars and Dreamers.
SA’s hottest female Hip-Hop DJ, Ms Cosmo, ended the event on a high note with her mad mixing skills. Throughout it all the host, radio DJ and Hip Hop artist Ayanda MVP, had everyone amped up with her endless energy and excitement.
The celeb scene didn’t end there, with the MCs being TV sports presenters, Mpho Maboi and Thomas Mlambo. Fans got to meet them and also mingled with soccer legends like Orlando Pirates right-back, Happy Jele and Supersport United defender, Morgan Gould. All five Smirnoff Kings – Sibusiso ‘Rhee’ Zuma, Thabo Mngomeni, Benedict Vilakazi, Pollen Ndlanya and Stanton Fredericks were also there, snapping selfies with supporters.
The event was lit with fans putting their foosball and PlayStation talents to the test, watching tricksters show off their skills and capturing memories in the photo booth. Best of all, entrance was free, because with Smirnoff, Everyone’s Invited.
