Being Woman will serve as Titi’s last offer of her tour Songs My Mother Taught Me.

After a successful tour of the defining concept Songs My Mother Taught Me, Titi Luzipo is back with another concept that aims to celebrate women in their entirety: Being Woman celebrates the art and power of women. Titi will be featuring her mother Vuyelwa Qwesha-Luzipo who is a distinguished and prominent jazz musician and inversely a great inspiration in Titi’s thriving music career.

Titi says: “The importance of women in society has become a foreign understanding. The role women play in society should be celebrated more than it currently is. With the recent killings of women in the country, it is only befitting to heal those who have been affected by this terrific ordeal through song and intricate melodies. The pain endured yet the joy it brings. Most people refer to people as human beings, some say women are women beings.  We need to start thinking what it actually means to be a woman.”

Titi’s mother – Vuyelwa Qwesha Luzipo – is a renowned jazz brand who came to fame in the 70’s as lead singer of The Soul Jazzmen, one of the greatest jazz bands of the time, which featured greats such the late Zim Ngqawana, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Feya Faku, Tete Mbambisa and many others.  In recognition of her career and contributions, she was awarded a Legend Award in 2016 for her contribution in jazz in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“My mother was not as liberated as I am. She had no freedom.  The apartheid regime limited their expressions in song and resulted to scarce performances. The aim of ‘Songs My Mother Taught Me’ is to bring alive those songs which could not be sung and relive the moments shared by those before us and celebrate them as heritage”, Titi comments.

Born into a musically gifted family, Titi’s late grandfather, CB Qwesha was a musical genius and composer. His greatest work – Ndisindise O Jehova [Save me Oh Thou Jehova] became one of the world’s greatest hymns. Titi has become a household name in the jazz circles of the country.  Titi has taken on big stages namely – Joy of Jazz, Cape Town Jazz Festival, Buyel’ekhaya Jazz Festival, backing multi-award winning vocalist Nomfundo Xaluva, Afro-pop singer Siphokazi, and rubbing shoulders with greats such as Kendrick Scott, Brenda Russel, Jose James and more. She has been invited at prestigious events in the corporate sphere, leaving major corporate clients and stake holders yearning for more.

Now based in Johannesburg, in 2016 Titi toured nationally Songs My Mother Taught Me, a tribute to the massive musical influence her mother that had sold out performances in Durban and Cape Town.  She has also recently completed a successful tour in Germany and Switzerland with South Africa’s greatest a capella bands – Africappella. Titi is now focused on her 1st debut album which will be released in 2017.

Titi Luzipo’s Songs My Mother Taught Me Tour is supported by the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism administered by Concerts SA which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
